Inlays and Onlays

What Are Inlays & Onlays?

Inlays & Onlays are the precise shaped pieces of porcelain used to repair/restore damaged part of the teeth. Unlike fillings which are done directly in the mouth, Inlays & Onlays are done in a dental laboratory on a model of your teeth and then bonded to the tooth.

They are generally only used on the teeth at the back of your mouth (Molars & Premolars) that have sustained a moderate level of damage/ decay. They don’t always replace the use of crowns but often helps in keeping most of the healthy tooth intact and also minimizes the drilling and trauma to the tooth.

They are very useful in tooth restoration in a number of situations. The main ones include:

  • Restoration of a large cavity and weak tooth
  • As an alternative to filling
  • As an alternative to crown

How Long Do Inlays & Onlays Last?

With the potential to last for decades Inlays & Onlays are regarded as a long-term solution for fixing your teeth. They can last considerably longer than conventional fillings given that you maintain good oral hygiene.

Benefits of Inlays & Onlays

  • They are strong and can last longer than fillings.
  • They are suitable for the back teeth (Molars & Premolars) where the white fillings may look unnatural.
